Privacy

What we collect
- Your email address, a password (stored only as a secure hash), your name, handle, optional bio and your birth year.
- The sessions you mark as going or maybe, the people and rinks you follow, and what you post.
- An optional home area, rounded to about half a mile and never shown to anyone.
- Daily page-view totals. We don’t store IP addresses with page views.
What we don’t do
- No direct messages, no photo uploads and no tracking of anyone’s location.
- No tracking cookies, no share scripts and no analytics services. Only two outside services load in your browser: map pictures from OpenStreetMap and, on some pages, one ad from adengine.us (see Advertising). Maps use no API key and no map account: the map code is served from this site, and the map pictures come straight from OpenStreetMap to your browser when a map scrolls into view. OpenStreetMap sees that request (your IP address and that it came from publicskates.com), as any website does; we send it nothing about you.
- We don’t sell your information.
- Rink staff see how many people are going, never who.
Advertising
Some pages show one banner ad from AdEngine (adengine.us), the small ad network run by WeldonPC, the company behind PublicSkates. For now the ads are for WeldonPC’s own services.
The banner sits below the main content of the home page, the rinks list, rink pages, state and city pages, This weekend, About and FAQ. It never appears on skate session pages, the feed, sign-in, account, settings, notification, rink-staff, admin or widget pages, or on this page and the terms.
To show an ad, your browser loads a script from adengine.us, asks it for one banner, loads the banner image, and reports once that the page was viewed and once that the banner was shown. Like any website, adengine.us receives your IP address, your browser type and the address of this site with those requests.
- No cookies, no profile. AdEngine sets no cookies, gives you no ID and does not track you from site to site.
- How your IP address is used. adengine.us looks up the approximate city for your IP address in a location database kept on its own server (nothing is sent to anyone else), so that ads meant for one area are shown only there. It also uses the address to count each ad view or click only once and to leave out robots and WeldonPC’s own office traffic. The address is not stored with the counts; the temporary entries made from it expire within six hours and are cleared from the server within two days.
- What is kept. Daily totals only: page views for this site, and views and clicks for each ad. The adengine.us web server also keeps a standard access log (IP address, time, address requested, referring site, browser) for security; it is deleted on a rolling schedule.
- Clicking an ad passes through adengine.us, which counts the click, and then opens the advertiser’s site, which has its own privacy policy.
- Nothing about you is sold or shared.
Young skaters
You must be 13 or older to create an account. Profiles of skaters aged 13–17 are always private and are never named to people they haven’t approved.
We email you to confirm your account, reset your password, and when a skate you’re going to is cancelled or changed. Digests, reminders and social emails can be turned off in Settings or with the unsubscribe link in any of those emails.
Deleting your account
Settings → Delete my account removes your answers and follows immediately; your comments show as “Deleted skater”.
